A country show with extra grunt – Balaklava counts down to show day
Nothing screams “country show” like the squeals of fun from sideshow alley, a chorus of farm animals and the roar of sparkling V8 utes!
Get ready to rev your engines on September 28, as shining big rigs roll into the Balaklava Show, to take part in the Show’s popular Ute Muster for the first time. Rev heads from across the state won’t want to miss the chance to shine a spotlight on their well-oiled and much-loved machines.
Whether it’s a street-savvy ride, a classic beauty, or a well-loved workhorse, there’s a category for everyone’s pride and joy (except perhaps the family people mover). From Best Street to Best Farm Ute, Best Classic to Best 4×4, the competition will be fierce. There are also novelty categories to enter like Furthest Travelled, Biggest Bullbar, or Dirtiest Ute.
Trucks will also be on show, with categories for different age groups, farm trucks, show trucks, and more. There’s even a Best Fleet category for businesses.
Another section that has become a highlight of the Balaklava Show is the Upcycle Competition. Entrants are challenged to transform something old into something new. Whether it’s furniture, art, or something completely unexpected, let your imagination run wild, with cash prizes up for grabs for taking out the recycling gong.
From its humble beginnings in 1871 as a simple stock display and ploughing match, where local farmers furrowed a paddock near Dunn’s Bridge with great gusto, vying for prizes totalling £25, the “Balak” Show has evolved into a much-loved community event.
Today, the show offers a huge range of attractions, from the Horses in Action and traditional agricultural displays to live music and plenty of entertainment for young and old. Like many of the state’s country shows, it’s a great chance for the community to show off their hidden talents. From savvy scone bakers and captivating photographers to patient produce growers and chicken charmers, there’s prestigious blue ribbons waiting to be snatched up. And don’t forget to cheer on the contestants in the Balaklava Show Person and Rural Ambassador competitions.
A good old-fashioned day out for everyone, families can enjoy an interactive ‘Sing Along with Jimmy’ and live tunes from singing duo, Junelee. Local agricultural expert, Belinda Cay, will officially open the show, kicking off a day full of fun in sideshow alley, a variety of exhibitors in Ralli Pavilion, all of your traditional show fare from Dagwood dogs to strawberries and cream, as well as super popular asian dishes from Balaklava’s Filipino community.
