Balaklava’s Eisteddfod is a Mid-North Musical Feast
This week, the usually quiet mid-north town will come alive with the sound of music at the 28th Balaklava Eisteddfod. Entrants from 94 different suburbs will tune their instruments and warm up their vocal chords as they converge for a musical extravaganza.
Eisteddfod? What’s that?
Originally a Welsh term meaning a “sitting”, an Eisteddfod is where performing artists come together to compete, compare, and learn from one another. The Balaklava Eisteddfod, established in 1997 by the Balaklava Community Arts Inc., is one of South Australia’s four prestigious Eisteddfods. What started from humble beginnings has grown into a major community event, offering a fantastic stage for budding artists to fine-tune their craft. Even the likes of Sir Robert Helpman from Mount Gambier, Keith Michell from Port Pirie, and June Bronhill from Broken Hill owe their star-studded careers to local competitions like this one.
What to Expect
Enjoy the performances of novices and seasoned performers as they hit the stage in a range of disciplines, including band and instrumental music, plus choral and vocal performances. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the arts and recognise the dedicated and passionate volunteers who make this event possible year after year.
