A lifetime of caring – Shirley Carn reaches an extraordinary milestone
Whyalla Hospital and Health Service is honouring a true hero this September – Shirley Carn, their longest-serving nurse, is reaching an incredible 62 years in the profession.
Born in Port Pirie and raised in Whyalla, she began her nursing career at the Whyalla Hospital in 1962 at just 19 years old. In 1969, she secured a permanent position in the Maternity Ward, and in 1995, she furthered her qualifications by becoming an Enrolled Nurse. Today, she continues to work in the Minya Jida Surgical Ward.
Having experienced incredible changes and advances in the healthcare industry, one thing has held true – Shirley’s love of giving back. Often described by her patients as the ‘best nurse ever’, Shirley is praised for her compassionate nature and willingness to go the extra mile. Her dedication to nursing and her community is evident in her long career and at 83 this unique treasure of the medical world shows no signs of slowing down!
Her story is an inspiration to us all, and her legacy is sure to continue with her daughter and grandson, both Enrolled Nurses in Adelaide.
