Drought rebates for farm upgrades and support for rural communities are now open
Applications are now open for the On-Farm Drought Infrastructure Rebate Scheme, part of a $5 million package from the State Government to help farmers tackle the challenges of drought and prepare for the future.
This year has been one of the hardest yet for South Australian farmers. For some, the header didn’t even make it out of the shed. To say this drought has been rough is an understatement.
And with primary industries and agribusinesses generating over $18 billion in revenue and employing more than 78,000 people, supporting our farmers and agricultural industry is crucial.
Farmers can now apply for rebates of up to 75% (to a maximum of $5,000 GST exclusive) to invest in projects like water infrastructure upgrades, stock containment areas, grain and fodder storage, soil moisture monitors, and weather stations.
This scheme is part of an $18 million drought support package, shaped by advice from drought roundtables and the SA Drought Advisory Group, which brings together voices from primary industries and all levels of government.
But it’s not all about farms, it’s about maintaining heathy and thriving rural communities too. The package includes Connecting Communities Grants, offering up to $5,000 (GST exclusive) for local groups, councils, and not-for-profits to host events that bring people together and strengthen social connections. Groups can also apply for funding to host mental health-related training courses with applications open until Monday March 31.
Minister for Primary Industries Clare Scriven said that building resilience to drought is critical for both farmers and communities. “Equipping communities to also continue fostering community cohesion is an important part of supporting our farmers and regional towns.”
