Winter Sport is Back! SA Regional Footy’s Chook Harslett is ready…

Once again that time of year has come around very quickly for the start of the winter sports competition.

The 2026 football and netball seasons start this Saturday in the Yorke Peninsula and Great Flinders Football Leagues. Both comps have been given the “all clear” to commence on the same weekend as the AFL’s Gather Round.

SA REGIONAL FOOTY’s Livestreaming service will cover 13 leagues in North and Western communities of SA, with most competitions starting either on April 18 or ANZAC Day.

New Faces – Different Colours

This week’s games will, like every year, have an injection of new players, returning players, new coaches, new volunteers (hopefully) and new enthusiasm. And we can’t wait!!

The recruiters in the Yorke Peninsula Football League have been busy, and by round one many clubs will be showing off some new faces ready for a big season.

Round One – YPFL

Kicking it off this weekend we’ll see the CY Cougars at home (Maitland), taking on the Southern Eagles.

Ethan Miller (Unley Jets), Nathan Studham (Mundulla) and Tom & Nick Tape (Westminster) will add to the Eagles squad.

Kadina with take on Bute at the home of the Bloods, with the home team welcoming Matt Ramsey (Kimba), Joel Bettes (Hummocks Watchman Eagles) and Angus Poole (back from Lockleys).

For the Roosters, new recruits include Foster Mesecke (Lockleys), Bailey Gaskin (Yankalilla) and Will and Matt Gould (Lucindale).

Paskeville Magpies will play at home, coming up against the Moonta Demons.

Moonta welcomes Tyson Irlam (Willaston) and Jarman Sigal (North Adelaide’s list)

Last Years Premiers, the CMS Crows will take on Wallaroo at the Curramulka Oval.

The Crows will add Ned Stevens (West Adelaide) and Austin Harris (Gawler Central). Both players spent time in the junior Gold Coast Suns Academy program.

The Ardrossan Kangaroos drew the BYE for the first week back.

It’ll be an interesting round one with so many new faces – the above mentioned recruits just a few of the newbies in the league.

Round One – Great Flinders

The Great Flinders League will start the season with two games – the Cummins Ramblers, Tumby Bay and Elliston Districts will have to wait until next week to get a kick start.

Cummins Kapinnie Cougars will host last years Premiers, the Lock Roos, and the Ungarra Oval will be the venue to see Eyre United take on last years Runners Up United Yeelanna

As for other leagues covered by SA REGIONAL FOOTY Livestreaming – Adelaide Plains, Northern Areas, North Eastern, Spencer Gulf, Eastern Eyre, Barossa Light & Gawler and Western Eyre will see Round One action on April 18. Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Far North and Kangaroo Island leagues pull on their boots on ANZAC DAY.
