Good news from the coast with the much-loved Streaky Bay Jetty open again and looking better than ever
After months of restoration work, the 130-year-old iconic Streaky Bay Jetty has had a spiffy spruce-up to make sure it stands strong for generations to come. Locals and visitors can once again fish, dive, swim, or take a stroll along the 340-metre stretch that’s long been part of the town’s story.
The $9.7 million project included new steel piles, safety ladders, and handrails, plus a few comfort upgrades like benches to take in the sea views. The jetty can now handle small vehicles again, making refuelling and marine work easier, and the nearby swimming pool is set to reopen too.
Some of the old timber was saved and will be repurposed by community groups, keeping a little piece of history alive.
The project was funded through the Department for Infrastructure and Transport’s Asset Sustainment Program and the SA Jetties Renewal Program – a $20 million commitment to help restore and futureproof South Australia’s ageing jetties.
It’s not just Streaky Bay getting some love either. Haslam Jetty is next in line for a $1.6 million upgrade, with $824,000 from the Renewal Program helping fast-track the works. Port Lincoln and Port Elliot jetties have already been restored, and Ardrossan is currently getting its own makeover, with more to follow across the state.
Mayor Travis Barber said, “The Streaky Bay Jetty is one of our town’s most treasured landmarks. These works safeguard its place at the heart of our community for generations to come.”
The reopening comes just in time for boating season and the warmer weather – perfect for throwing a line, going for a dip, or soaking up one of the Eyre Peninsula’s best views.
