There’ll be plenty of history making its way down the Murray this month, as the River Murray Boat Owners Association celebrates its 50th anniversary with a spectacular flotilla at Murray Bridge.
The milestone celebration will be held at Sturt Reserve on Sunday, October 18, with a sail past of paddle boats and river boats set to provide quite the spectacle from the riverbank.
Among the vessels taking part will be PS Daisy, one of the River Murray’s historic paddle steamers, along with PW Mayflower and PV Matilda.
The Mayflower will make the trip from Mannum for the occasion and will also offer cruises during the day, giving visitors the chance to experience the river from aboard South Australia’s oldest operating paddle wheeler.
The 50th anniversary is a significant milestone for the River Murray Boat Owners Association, which brings together people with a shared passion for the river and its vessels.
The association is also behind the River Rumble, a biennial event that sees a fleet of boats travel the Murray together and regularly attracts plenty of interest from communities along the route.
October’s celebration will be a much more relaxed affair, with locals and visitors encouraged to simply find a spot at Sturt Reserve and enjoy the passing parade.
Pack a picnic, bring some meat to throw on the public barbecues and settle in by the river as the flotilla cruises past.
