Four nights of cricket, big names and all the bells and whistles arrive in Quorn thanks to NRMA Insurance

The Quorn Cricket Festival will light up the oval for four huge days of night cricket from December 4 to 7 thanks to major support from NRMA Insurance.

In what’s shaping up to be the biggest cricket moment in 147 years for this Flinders Ranges town, Quorn’s oval is set to shine under temporary floodlights. Cricket lovers are in for a treat with a full test-match style setup, complete with night games, a DJ, giveaways, food stalls and a Saturday-night appearance from cricket legend Greg Blewett, best known for his years in the Australian Test team through the 90s and early 2000s.

And, true to country form, the whole thing began because a couple of blokes were changing a tyre.

The Chance Meeting That Started It All

While doing some work on the pitch, volunteers saw a couple of NRMA Insurance staff pull in with a flat tyre. The duo were already travelling through the region looking for country cricket grounds to support, when the roadside chat turned into something much bigger. Between jacking up the car and handing over a wheel brace, Quorn had been invited to host a full four-day cricket festival under lights. A twist of fate that will turn into one of the biggest weekends the town will ever see.

NRMA Insurance Executive Manager Marketing Brand and Communications Sally Kiernan said,
“We’re thrilled to be spotlighting community cricket in Quorn and helping the club increase its capacity to play, with the opportunity to extend its schedule into the evenings.
“We know daytime play has been limited at times due to the impacts of severe weather conditions like extreme heat, so we hope the provision of a temporary floodlight trial will provide new ways for the cricket community to continue to thrive in Quorn.”

For the local club, the weekend means a lot. President Paul Rogers said,
“Cricket is the heartbeat of our community, so we are pumped to have teams and supporters converging on our much-loved ground to celebrate this great game.
“The opportunity to play in the evening adds a whole new dimension to our seasons’ fixture, providing us the ability to play more games, and trial new schedules that offer greater flexibility for local families.”

Local Ties Bring Blind Cricket SA to the Festival

The festival also features Blind Cricket SA, with Australian representative Lachlan Wallace travelling to Quorn for Sunday’s match. Wallace has strong family ties to the town, with his grandfather Des Wallace having served as the local school principal, and respected community go-getter. His involvement brings something special to the program, giving locals a rare chance to see blind cricket on their home ground.

What to Expect Across the Four Days

Over the four days, Quorn will welcome nine teams for a fixture packed with long-standing rivalries, city-versus-country clashes, junior talent and special guests. Saturday is set to be the showstopper, stacked with fast-paced T20 matches and cricket legend Greg Blewett on the ground to meet fans and soak up the atmosphere while he rests his ruptured Achilles from a not than ideal comeback game for Melbourne’s Berwick Springs.

The oval will have food stalls, a live DJ, giveaways and all the bells and whistles of the big leagues. Full catering will run through the canteen each day, with menus prepared by local chefs, while the local school will jump in to run the Saturday night teas as a fundraiser. Alcohol is licensed on-site, and chuck in your decky as seating is limited.
