Horrocks Highway’s $90m Upgrade Promise

The Mid North’s Horrocks Highway is set to receive a $90 million upgrade if the Malinauskas Government is re-elected.

In 2025, volunteer emergency workers attended five fatalities on the major arterial route, which runs between the Flinders Ranges and Gawler.

Labor Candidate for the new Ngadjuri electorate (formerly Frome), Tony Piccolo, said the state of Horrocks Highway was the number one concern for locals.

“I’ve listened and strongly advocated on their behalf for more upgrades,” he said.

On average, more than 4000 vehicles, including 650 heavy vehicles use the Horrocks Highway each day.

Over the last four years, the State Government has undertaken significant upgrades, including new overtaking lanes both north and south of Tarlee. Other improvements include shoulder sealing, pavement rehabilitation, lane widening, sealing of local road approaches, bridge upgrades, safety barriers, Audio Tactile Line Marking and improvements to the Gladstone rail corridor and level crossing.

Premier, Peter Malinauskas, said “this Labor Government has already invested in important safety upgrades along the Horrocks Highway but we stand committed to do more.”

“By taking this targeted approach, we will improve safety and unlock greater productivity in the Mid North’s vibrant tourism and agricultural hub.”

Here’s what the $90 million commitment will include

  • A new overtaking lane at Sevenhill
  • The extension of two existing overtaking lanes near Templers and Tarlee.
  • The replacement of a culvert near Yacka to allow access for road trains
  • Road and bridge widening, and pavement upgrades
  • Streetscaping, main street resealing, and junction improvements in the townshipsof Tarlee, Rhynie, Auburn, Watervale and Sevenhill
