With crops looking the best they have in years, Hart Field Day arrives at the perfect time for growers to inspect trials, compare notes and hear from industry experts
If ever there was a season for a crop inspection, this is it.
With paddocks full of promise and plenty of moisture in the ground, optimism is making a welcome return across South Australia’s cropping regions.
It’s the perfect backdrop for this year’s Hart Field Day, where growers will gather on Tuesday September 15th to compare notes, inspect trials and hear the latest research that could help shape future seasons.
Held each September, Hart Field Day has become one of South Australia’s leading cropping events, attracting hundreds of growers, agronomists and industry representatives from across the state and interstate.
Hart Field-Site Group executive officer Sandy Haskell said the improved season had created plenty to talk about.
“After a few tough seasons, good rains have really brought about a change in optimism, and it’s encouraging to see paddocks across the region looking so good,” she said.
“The trial site is looking fantastic too, so it’s a great opportunity to see how the crops are progressing and discuss everything from disease management and new innovations through to some of our longer-term research.”
Talk directly with the experts
More than 20 rolling sessions will run throughout the day, covering everything from cereal yield potential, managing crop disease and controlling weeds, soil fertility, on-farm biodiesel, cropping systems, farm safety and more.
But beyond the research, Hart Field Day is a chance to catch up with neighbours, swap ideas with other cereal growers and ask questions directly of the researchers and industry experts behind the latest trials.
“They make themselves incredibly accessible throughout the day,” Ms Haskell said.
“It’s a great opportunity for growers to ask questions, have conversations and take away practical ideas they can apply back on their own farms.”
The Hart trial site, about 10 kilometres north of Blyth, is looking its best, giving visitors the chance to see first-hand how different varieties, crop management strategies and research projects are performing in a season that’s shaping up to be one of the better ones in recent years.
