Golden North to Leave Laura After 100 Years

It’s the end of an era for Laura, with Golden North confirming it will shut up shop and move production to Murray Bridge after more than a century in the small Mid North town.

The decision will impact around 80 workers, plus local suppliers and businesses that have long supported and been supported by the iconic ice cream maker.

It’s another tough hit for regional South Australia. The move may help future-proof the company, but after more than 100 years in Laura, it’s a big change for a town with deep ties to Golden North.

Golden North says it will do what it can to redeploy affected staff and provide support during the transition. The State Government has also stepped in with a support package that includes job and mental health services, and $1 million for community infrastructure in Laura.

The relocation will ensure the company continues to be owned and operated in South Australia using locally sourced milk, providing more support for SA dairy farmers. It will also provide new employment opportunities for staff impacted by the collapse of Beston Global Food Company.

“This is a pivotal time for Golden North,” said Director Dimi Kyriazis. “We’re preserving our legacy while embracing innovation, but we’re deeply grateful to our staff, who’ve made Golden North what it is today.”

Geoff Brock, Member for Stuart, acknowledged the disappointment – “It’s important this support package is utilised to reduce the impact and create new opportunities for local growth in the area.”

Northern Areas Council Mayor Sue Scarman described the loss as “significant.”

“Golden North has been a major employer in our region for over 100 years,” she said. “We’ll work closely with the community to make sure this support helps Laura find a positive path forward.”

State Treasurer Stephen Mullighan said while the move offers “exciting opportunities,” the Government understands the blow this is for the region.
