From Battling Dairy Farmers to the Cream of the Crop- Fleurieu Milk Celebrates 20 years

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

When it gives you cheap milk prices, collapsing farm returns and a dairy industry on its knees, apparently you build your own milk company.

Twenty years ago, the dairy industry was in crisis. Rising feed costs, and falling farm gate milk prices were squeezing family farms to breaking point.

The impact was being felt in Myponga, where the number of dairy farms had fallen from around 40 to just 10.

For dairy farmers Barry and Merridie Clarke, Chris and Karen Royans, and Geoff and Louise Hutchinson, the writing was on the wall.

But instead of throwing their hands in the air, they rolled up their sleeves.

A Grassroots Solution Born from Necessity

The three families came together with a simple but ambitious idea — process and sell their own milk, create a premium product and take control of their own future.

They sourced two shipping containers for a bargain price — ironically these same containers were once used as ice-cream factories during World War 2.

Still running their dairy farms, they processed their product on-site and distributed farm fresh white milk to local Fleurieu businesses.

It was a grassroots solution born out of necessity to survive in the industry.

Fleurieu Milk Company has since become one of South Australia’s most recognised and respected food brands, employing more than 100 staff, working with nine dairy farms, and turning over $50 million annually.

THEN….And NOW. Fleurieu Milk Company 20 years on.

According to General Manager Nick Hutchinson, the success story has never been about becoming the biggest.

“It’s really a story of blood, sweat and tears,” he said.

“It’s taken some seriously hard work, but they’ve stayed consistent and stayed true to what they believed in from the beginning.”

That philosophy has seen Fleurieu Milk carve out a unique place in the market.

Quality, Sustainability and Community

While many large-scale milk processors focus on maximising shelf life and reducing costs, Fleurieu Milk built its reputation on producing premium milk with a richer, creamier flavour and a more traditional approach to processing.

Rather than competing on price, the company chose to compete on quality.

Its range now includes everything from full cream and flavoured milk to cream-on-top products that have become favourites among South Australian consumers.

Customers can even purchase Fleurieu Milk’s signature glass bottles and refill them at outlets across South Australia, reducing waste while enjoying farm-fresh South Australian milk the way it was meant to be.

Nick said understanding the value of the product had been critical to the company’s success.

“You have to understand the value of what you’re producing and stay true to that,” he said.

“The founders understood that from day one and we’ve stayed consistent with those values for 20 years.”

Alongside its support for major organisations and charities, Fleurieu Milk continues to invest in local sporting clubs, community groups and grassroots initiatives across South Australia.

It’s a philosophy that reflects the business itself — local people backing local people.

Still Family Owned, 20 Years Later

While some of the founding farmers are now enjoying retirement, the business is still 100 per cent owned by the forward-thinking families who started it.

“Geoff and Louise and Chris and Karen have now retired from dairy farming, but Barry’s still going. He was born to milk cows, he loves it.

“They have great trust in their team but are still very much leaders of the culture,” he said.

As Fleurieu Milk celebrates 20 years, its journey stands as a reminder that some of South Australia’s greatest success stories begin around kitchen tables, dairy sheds and farm gates.

What started with three families backing each other, thinking outside the square and believing in the value of their product has grown into one of South Australia’s great regional success stories.

And while the company may now be considered the cream of the crop, its roots remain firmly planted in the same values that started it all — family, hard work, quality and community.
