If you’ve never heard of flag football, you’re not alone.
It’s like American football, but without the full-contact tackles. Instead of bringing players to the ground, defenders stop play by pulling a flag from the ball carrier’s belt. It’s fast, strategic and one of the world’s fastest-growing sports.
Now it’s making its way to regional South Australia, with the Barossa set to host Oceania’s biggest flag football competition later this year.
Barossa To Host International Competition
More than 550 players and coaches, along with their families, supporters and spectators, are expected to make their way to the Barossa when Capture the Flag takes over Nuriootpa Centennial Park on October 24 and 25.
Teams from across Australia, New Zealand, Asia and beyond will compete, giving the Barossa economy a welcome boost while giving locals the chance to see the sport up close.
Flag football has built a strong international following and is set for one of its biggest moments yet after being included in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Event organisers, Flag Football Australia, said “the event will strongly align with the first ever NFL game being played in Melbourne in September.”
A New Sport For The Barossa
The Barossa Council says the event is another example of the region attracting major sporting competitions that bring people, visitors and spending into the region.
Mayor Bim Lange said while the Barossa continues to be a destination of choice for events of all formats and styles, it’s particularly exciting for the region to host a new sport of this calibre.
“It’s great to see a new sport come to the region and one that has such a strong following internationally,” he said.
“Hosting this competition creates an opportunity for people to witness the ultimate showcase of athleticism and strategy with athletes from all over Australia and the world. And Council is proud to be supporting this event.
“Council is proud to be supporting this event and it’s great to see our recreation facilities utilised for a range of different sports codes.”
Mayor Lange said securing this competition highlights the region’s broad appeal and its ability to attract major events that deliver significant economic and community benefits.
