FarmHer workshops coming to Southern Flinders

FarmHer workshops for rural women blend farming basics with fun and creativity

There’s something new sprouting in the Southern Flinders this August – and no, it’s not just the winter weeds. It’s a workshop series made for FarmHers who want to brush up their skills and have a good time while they’re at it.

Whether you’re fresh to farm life, keen for a refresher, or just craving a day out with like-minded legends, Farm-Her Farming ‘101’ might be right up your alley.

Paddock smarts served with something a little different

Hosted by the crew at 5431 Collective and Ladies on the Land, this four-part series blends the basics of farming with a splash of creativity and wellbeing. Watercolours with your weed management? Don’t mind if I do. Canapés with your crop tour? Yes please. Baking with your budgeting? Sign me up. Oh, and did we mention it’s free?

Ladies on the Land is an informal group that brings together women of the Upper North to meet, learn, share ideas and have a laugh. It also acts as a “hub” of the Upper North Farming Systems Group, making it the perfect fit for this kind of practical-meets-playful workshop series.

Running across four sessions in August, each workshop includes morning tea, hands-on activities, and a good dose of fun. You can sign up for one or dive into the whole lot.

Why now, and who’s it for?

“With the ongoing impacts of drought and the juggle of rural life, we thought it was time to create something that gives women the chance to upskill, reconnect and just breathe,” the organisers said. “We wanted to offer something for rural women that was practical and a bit of fun – because let’s be honest, sometimes you need a bit of both. FarmHer is all about learning some handy skills, sharing a laugh, maybe even a glass of bubbles, and walking away feeling like you’re not doing it alone.

The series is designed with newer ‘FarmHers’ in mind – women who might not have grown up in agriculture, or who are juggling young kids and haven’t had the chance to dive into farm life the traditional way. But really, it’s for all FarmHers who are keen to get off the farm for a few hours, and spend time with others in the same boat.

The line-up includes

  • Bake & Wool – Make five different kinds of dough with Gaye from Black Rock Kitchen (yes, you get to take it home), plus a sustainable ag and livestock intro from AWI’s Shannon.

  • Pests & Paint – Learn to identify and tackle five common weeds, then wind down with a watercolour workshop with Lynne from Fifth St Art.

  • Future & Flex – Navigate farm finance and succession planning before stretching it all out in a Pilates session (comfy clothes encouraged).

  • Crops & Canapés – Take a guided bus tour with Agronomist Beth Sleep, then finish up with a catered lunch in the 5431 Collective garden.

The FarmHer concept fits perfectly into the 5431 Collective ethos of gathering, connecting and collaborating – with a bit of joy baked in. Spaces are limited, so grab your spot today!
