Rain has fallen in parts of SA, but the drought isn’t over – here’s how to access grants, counselling, tax help and community support

While some parts of South Australia have seen rain, the reality is that the drought is far from over for many regional communities. To help farmers, small businesses and families through the tough times, the State Government rolled out a $73 million Drought Support Package. If you haven’t tapped into it yet and need a reminder about what’s on offer, here’s a breakdown on what’s on offer and how to access it.

Business Support and Financial Counselling

Small businesses in drought-affected areas can access tailored help, thanks to

  • $1.5 million for Small Business Fundamentals programs – run through seven Regional Development Australia (RDA) offices across SA.

  • Free financial counselling – up to 30 hours through Rural Business Support, with three dedicated counsellors now available statewide.

Workshops and mentoring cover everything from cashflow management and supply chain disruption to adopting new technologies and preparing drought plans.

Find your local program through these RDAs

  • RDA Limestone Coast

  • RDA Yorke and Mid North

  • RDA Far North

  • RDA Barossa, Gawler, Light & Adelaide Plains

Community Connection Events

Isolation can be just as damaging as financial stress. Connecting Communities events give people a chance to share experiences and strengthen ties.

So far, more than 80 events have been held across SA, including a recent Healthy Soils breakfast in Victor Harbor that drew 150 people.

Community groups can apply for funding to run their own events that bring people together.

Mental Health Support

Help is available if drought is taking a toll on your mental health.

  • Start with your GP or local health provider.

  • Visit the SA Health website to find services in your region.

  • In a crisis, call the Emergency Triage and Liaison Service (13 14 65) – available 24/7.

Farm Debt Mediation

Through the Small Business Commission SA, farmers can access Farm Debt Mediation – a neutral, structured process to negotiate with creditors before debt recovery begins. Farmers don’t need to be in default to apply.

Tax Support for Primary Producers

The Australian Government offers a range of tax concessions to help manage through drought, including:

  • Farm Management Deposits (FMDs) – save in good years, draw on funds in tough years.

  • Income tax averaging – even out tax obligations if your income fluctuates.

  • Immediate deductions – for fencing, water facilities and fodder storage.

  • Livestock concessions – defer or spread profits if you’re forced to sell due to drought.

  • Woolgrower support – defer profits if two clips fall in one year.
