Whyalla Welcomes Australian Giant Cuttlefish

Every winter, Whyalla becomes home to one of the world’s most extraordinary natural events, as tens of thousands of Australian Giant Cuttlefish gather along the coastline to breed.

And naturally, the town throws a festival around it.

Running throughout June and July, Cuttlefest celebrates the world’s largest known cuttlefish aggregation with a packed calendar of events. There’s tours, art, music and even a giant inflatable cuttlefish called Sparkles.

Visitors can snorkel, dive or jump aboard glass-bottom boat tours for a close-up look at the colour-changing cuttlefish. Back on shore, the city comes alive with markets, workshops, talks and exhibitions celebrating marine life and coastal culture.

One of the standout attractions is the transformation of the iconic Whyalla Jetty into an open-air art gallery, featuring colourful cuttlefish-inspired artwork.

A photography exhibition at Westland Shopping Centre is also expected to turn plenty of heads, with the giant cuttlefish producing some truly incredible images beneath the surface.

Check out the stars of the show without getting your feet wet by visiting Whyalla Visitor Centre’s immersive virtual reality experience. From the comfort of a warm, dry seat, you’ll witness these remarkable creatures in their natural environment.

The biggest celebration of the festival is the Salty Sea’esta over the June long weekend, bringing live music, roving performers, interactive entertainment and seaside energy to the Whyalla Foreshore.
